Digital Visual Effect Inspired by Simon Stålenhag's Labyrinten
Different angle from the same scene, showing the effect reaction from different angles.
What started as an assignment to take on an imaginary task in a visual effect shot, ended up in an enlightening personal project, inspired by the superb imagery from Simon Stålenhag’s Labyrinten.
My admiration for Stålenhag’s work drive me to re-interpret this brilliant illustration from this fascinating world.
My first approach was to develop a system for both effects, the lightning and the smoky distortion. The lightning was created connecting 3 nulls and then distorting the resulting spline for finally trimming it to control the lightning. On the other hand the distortion from the ground was generated by a static Pyro system, that reacts to collisions that manually triggered the reaction.
Finally I ended up improving the system using Field Forces generated by the very geometry from the lightning, by doing this the system reaction is triggered automatically, and even so affecting the already distorted element multiple times. The forces are showed by the colored spike lines along the lightning.
Using the same distortion approach, I generated a different reaction from the Sphere and the glowing ground to visually link the elements. In addition to this a geometry was generated from the Pyro simulation to enhance the distortion from the ground along with the volume in the scene.
